Finland was the first country in the world to elect women to parliament, a little over a century ago. In that time, there have been just two female prime ministers before Marin, each serving for no longer than a year. Initially, many Finns were too embroiled in internal political strife the previous prime minister resigned after nationwide industrial strikes to make much of a fuss about Marin's record-setting age. Finland has reason to celebrate an overall impressive pipeline of female politicians with the potential to continue to advance to top political and business leadership. The culture of gender diversity is key. Having a strong pipeline does not necessarily translate to results in top leadership. We know that globally women often graduate in higher numbers and with better grades from universities across various academic disciplines.
Take the example of Iceland, where Vigdis Finnbogadottir was the first and the longest sitting woman president in the world — Boys and girls under the age of eight had only ever known a woman to be president. As a result, boys were questioning if men could possibly be president of their country some day. While he continues to support Finnish membership in EU, as do most Finns, he admits he is not happy with the lack of coordination with which the EU responded to the coronavirus pandemic, in contrast with the generally strong, proactive, and successful manner with which Finland and its neighbors—with the arguable exception of Sweden—conducted themselves.
