When was night of the living dead made

One thing to remember about Night of the Living Dead is that it was an independent production, meaning George A. According to AV Club , after Romero had a finished cut of the film, he placed a copy of it in the trunk of his car and set off to meet with various film distributors in New York City in hopes of selling his picture.

Essentially everyone he approached turned down the movie still called Night of the Flesh Eaters at the time except for Continental Distributing, though this would lead to a major issue with the film that would have ramifications for decades to come.

Back when George A. Romero made the movie, the original title was Night of the Flesh Eaters , a name that would stick until just before it was set to be released. According to the Library of Congress , a new title card was created and added at the beginning of the movie reading Night of the Living Dead , but Continental Distributing forgot to include one small, yet important detail: the copyright notice.

Initially, the producers and even George A. I convinced George that the black community would rather see me dead than saved, after all that had gone on, in a corny and symbolically confusing way. Besides, the heroes never die in American movies. The jolt of that and the double jolt of the hero figure being black seemed like a double-barreled whammy.

After all these years, Night of the Living Dead remains not only a classic in the eyes of horror hounds around the world but also movie lovers in general, thanks in part to the craftiness and ingenuity of George A.

Storyline Edit. A remake of George Romero's black-and-white classic that begins in a cemetery, as the recently-dead return to life - from an unknown cause - and attack the living as their prey. One woman escapes the frightening zombies to take refuge with others in a farmhouse, as every cadaver for miles around hungers for their flesh.

Trivia Bill Cardille appears as a reporter in both the version and the remake. Goofs at around 12 mins After Ben shoves a body out the kitchen door, you can see a cameraman's reflection in the door window. Quotes Barbara : They're us. Hondo : Say what? Nothing wrong with that I think we can all name some decent remakes. The original Night of the Living Dead was fascinating because it had at least one person we could identify with no matter who we were, and in many cases we could identify with the entire cast because each represented a part of ourselves. The film was also ahead of it's time because the Hero is African American and befriends the frightened woman and helps to protect everyone involved.

Henry acts as though his age and race predicate his leadership skills, despite the fact that he has been hiding out while Ben boarded up the windows and doors, securing their safety. It also seems worth mentioning that the Coopers are the only characters with a last name, which cements both their history and status — their legacy of whiteness. Tom and Judy attempt to build the bridges of communication between Henry and Ben, and ultimately agree that Ben is a more sensible leader.

You can be the boss down there. In an interview conducted by Tim Ferrante in and featured on the Criterion release, Jones relays a story about a ride home from the set one night with extra Betty Ellen Haughey.

We were driving through downtown Pittsburgh of all places and heading back to Duquesne when all of a sudden we became very aware of the fact that there were some teenagers in a car following us. And at first we thought it was some of the young folks who were around the filming.

And the paradox and the irony of that I had been walking around brandishing a tire iron at ghouls all day long, and there was somebody brandishing a tire iron at me from a car but in absolute seriousness. And that moment … the total surrealism of the racial nightmare of America being worse than whatever that was we were doing as a metaphor in that film lives with me to this moment.

The house is overrun with zombies and Ben has nowhere else to retreat but the cellar, his very own sunken place, if you will. There he manages to kill the reanimated bodies of the Coopers, and wait out the morning and rescue. Heroic, brave, black Ben emerges from the cellar at the sound of the American militia, all white, come to save the day. He exits the cellar, only to be shot dead, killed by yokel earning his badge killing zombies.

While there have been better-made horror movies in the 50 years since, some even directed by Romero himself, and there have been bigger budgets, better actors and more scares, there may not be any single denouement and message more frightening than the one George Romero leaves us with at the end of Night of the Living Dead.

Ben survived the night of the living dead but could not survive America. Crazy credits There is no on-screen copyright notice, nor any of the usual legal disclaimers typically found in movie credits; this is the main reason the film has been in the public domain since its release. Alternate versions Despite being billed as a collectors' edition and containing many extras, the UK Contender DVD appears to be missing several sequences including most of the cannibalism scenes following the attack on the car, as well as heavily reducing the trowel murder from 14 blows to three.

User reviews Review. Top review. An Iconic Zombie Film. This is "the" film that changed the way zombie films were created - more horrifying than ever before. Almost all zombie films that came after this one were patterned after this movie. The movie is outstanding for it's genre and film type.

This is a wonderful late at night film that I would highly recommend to fans of the horror genre. If you have not seen this film yet then you should find a copy to rent, buy or borrow because you will not be disappointed. Rainey-Dawn Jun 9, FAQ What is 'Night of the Living Dead' about?
